Varsity Golf

Varsity Golf – The Oglethorpe golf team opened their season with a heartbreaking loss to North Oconee by one stroke 150-149.  Oglethorpe and North Oconee are considered 1-2 in the region.
The match started promptly at 4pm with Jim Beatty and Nathan Mallonee, who are ranked 1-2 for OC, paired with North Oconee’s 1-2 golfers starting on the third hole at Jennings Mill Country Club.  Jake O’Bryan and Kory Lott, ranked 3-4, along with the Titians 3-4 started at the second tee.  Ben Giles and Jonah Ingram took their position on the first hole.
Conditions were overcast but not too windy.  However, the course was wet thus making the greens slow.  The players are not allowed golf carts but there was quite a little train of parents and coaches following the players.
High school golf matches like these are nine holes in lenght with the four lowest scores counted.  Those four scores are added together and that’s how a team score is computed.
For OC Nathan Mallonee shot a 2 under par 34 which was not only first place for OC it was first place for the match.  Jake O’Bryan was one stroke behind Malonee for the match with a 35.  Jim Beatty’s one over 37 was third and Kory Lott’s 44 brought up fourth place for the Patriots.  Ben Giles and Jonah Ingram were fifth and sixth respectively.
OC's next match is Thursday, March 8th when the Patriots travel to Catachee Golf Club to play Hart County.
