Middle School Basketball

Girls – Girls basketball coach Keith Goodwin said all he told his team at halftime was that they had never lost on that court (the new middle school basketball court).  It seem to do the trick, because at half time OC was down 12-4 to George Walton Academy (GW), but by the end of the game OC had pulled out yet another win, 16-14.

It didn’t start out pretty.  You could tell the girls had been off for a couple of weeks.  They were making mistakes with the basics: passing, shooting, moving the ball up and down the court.  At the end of the first quarter GW had the lead 7-3.  By half time GW had scored another five points while allowing OC one.

Besides Allexis Wymbs (3 points) scoring OC’s lone second quarter point Tori Wiggins stole the ball from GW at the buzzer.  Little did the OC fans know that this steal would be the start of an OC comeback that would take to the final seconds of the game.

OC Wins!!
OC came out in the third quarter a changed team.  They started playing better, with crisp passes plus they started taking the defense to GW. It took a little time to get moving in the right direction but at 1:41 left in the third quarter Wymbs scored bring OC to withing six of GW ending the quarter 14-8.  The middle school Patriots didn’t allow GW to score a goal in the third quarter.
At 3:05 remaining in the fourth quarter Zykiah Bazzell (6 points) hit from the lane putting OC in the lead for the first time in the game 15-14.
OC and GW would swap the ball back and forth, going up and down the court several times in the final minutes of the game.  But with 2.7 seconds remaining Elizabeth Goodwin (4 points) would make OC’s final point putting the Patriots ahead by two to win the game 16-14.  GW scored only two points in the second half.
Bazzell would be OC’s high scorer with six followed by Goodwin with four.  Wymbs would bag three, Ambernica Turner had two and Gena Mattox would make one from the free throw line.
Boys – The middle school boys faced off against the George Walton boys and lost a heartbreaker 30-29.  This is the fourth loss by the OC boys by two points or less, the three previous games went to overtime.

The boys started the first quarter like a house afire.  In the first two minutes they scored nine to GW’s goose egg, and for the quarter allowed GW only three.

Dylan Pulliam at the line.
GW started fighting back in the second quarter making more shots than OC.  With 3:27 remaining GW finally tied OC at 11.  OC lost the ball and GW went ahead by two.  Both teams went up and down the court when, with a little over a minute to go, OC recovered the lead on a jumper by Toney Harper (12 points and OC’s high scorer).  OC went into the locker room ahead by one, 15-14.

Coach Harris’s team came out in the third looking like the first quarter team that nearly shut out GW.  Dylan Pulliam (10 points), Harper and Fernando Browner (2 points) would score ten more points for OC but it was OC’s defense that throttled GW to just four third quarter points.
The reverse happened for OC in the fourth.  GW started finding the basket and OC’s offense went cold.  GW pulled ahead 28-27 with 1:23 left in the game.  With a minute remaining Jeffery Glenn (2 points) scored two putting OC back in the lead 29-28 but GW would hit a field goal with 42 seconds left in the game putting them ahead by one, 30-29.
The middle school Patriots take on St. Joseph Saturday, January 7th at 10:30am.
